1. Key Ingredients in Lash Glue
The ingredients in your eyelash extension adhesive are really crucial—not only for ensuring client safety but also for minimizing the risk of allergic reactions.
With various types of adhesive available in the market, each may contain different ingredients. However, at Charmlash, our lash glue features 3 main compounds:
Cyanoacrylate
Cyanoacrylate is a type of cyanoacrylate that is commonly used in eyelash extension glue. Cyanoacrylate is what causes the extensions to adhere and stay bonded with the natural lashes. It appears as a liquid from the start, but when exposed to the humidity in the air, it hardens into a solid form.
These fives types of Cyanoacrylate:
- Ethyl-cyanoacrylate
- Methyl-cyanoacrylate
- Butyl-cyanoacrylate
- Octyl-cyanoacrylate
- Alkoxy-cyanoacrylate
Among the five types of cyanoacrylate, ethyl-cyanoacrylate is the most frequently used in lash glue. Its popularity is due to its quick curing time, strong adhesion, and ease of production. At Charmlash, we also use various blends of these ingredients in our lash glues, resulting in different drying times and varying levels of humidity resistance.

PMMA
PMMA is an acrylic polymer added to eyelash extension glue to increase its viscosity, giving it a thicker consistency. This makes the glue easier to work with during application and improves its overall durability. The inclusion of PMMA also contributes to the longevity of the lash extensions by reducing the likelihood of premature breakdown.
Carbon black
This ingredient is responsible for giving the adhesive its deep black color, which seamlessly blends with natural lashes for a cohesive look. Since carbon black is denser than other components, it tends to settle at the bottom of the glue bottle when left undisturbed, requiring thorough shaking before use to ensure uniform color dispersion.
2. Suitable Drying-time Based on Lash Thickness
The thickness of your lash extensions affect the type of glue you should use:
For Thick Lashes: You can use a wider range of glues. Thick lashes are more forgiving and can accommodate a variety of adhesives, including those with slower drying times.
For Thin Lashes (0.02 & 0.03 mm): Using fast-drying glues are essential. Thin lashes require adhesives that dry quickly to ensure a strong bond without impacting the delicate nature of the extensions. Here are some recommended fast-drying time adhesive we recommend to use:
- 0.5-1 Second: Suitable for quick applications, providing a strong hold. Get the job done fast and holds strong with 0.5-1s Fast Drying Ultra Adhesive
- 0.5 Second: Ideal for advanced techniques and experienced artists. The 0.5s Magic Lash Adhesive is an ideal option for flawless results.
- 0.3 Second: Best for high-speed applications, but requires precise application skills. For the fastest of the fast! Try our Super Star Lash Adhesive 0.3s.
3. Glue Selection Based on Lash Type
The type of lash extensions you use also determines the best glue choice:
- Colored Lashes: Use clear adhesive. Clear glue ensures that the color of the lashes remains vibrant and does not alter the appearance with dark spots.
- Black Lashes: Opt for black adhesive. Black glue blends seamlessly with dark lashes, enhancing the overall look and providing a uniform appearance
4. Bonding Strength
As we mentioned earlier, lash adhesive is formulated using cyanoacrylate. This compound undergoes polymerization when exposed to moisture. When lash extensions are dipped into the adhesive and applied to natural lashes, a chemical reaction takes place, causing the adhesive to solidify and create a strong, long-lasting bond.
Therefore, bond strength is a critical factor in determining how long the extensions will last. High-quality glues offer strong adhesion, ensuring that lashes stay in place for several weeks.
5. Viscosity
Viscosity describes the thickness or flow of a liquid. Adhesives with higher viscosity have a thicker consistency, which provides better control and minimizes excessive spreading during application. Conversely, adhesives with lower viscosity are thinner and tend to dry faster.
- Thin Viscosity: Thin glues are easier to apply and distribute evenly on the lashes. They are suitable for fine, delicate lashes and precise applications.
- Thick Viscosity: Thick glues offer a stronger bond and are ideal for volume or mega volume lashes. They may require more effort to apply but provide durability and long-lasting results.
6. Shelf life
Shelf life is the period during which a product remains effective and safe when stored correctly. Lash glues have a limited shelf life because their ingredients can degrade over time. As they age, they can become less effective and potentially unsafe. Using expired glue might cause your lash extensions to fall off quickly, lead to irritation, or even trigger allergic reactions in your clients.
So, always check the expiration date and use the glue within its recommended period to ensure optimal performance. If you observe that your adhesive is becoming stringy and thick, it’s a strong indication that it’s time to replace it with a new bottle.
At Charmlash, our standard-drying glue has a shelf life of up to 6 months when unopened and up to 1 month after opening. For a premium option with a longer shelf life, try our Super Star and Magic Adhesives. These innovative products feature ultra-fast drying times, safe low-odor chemicals, and a shelf life of up to 8 months unopened and up to 2 months once opened.
7. Retention time
Retention time refers to how long the adhesive will hold the extensions in place. High-quality glues should provide a retention period of 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the type of glue and the client’s lifestyle.
8. Working Temperature & Humidity
Do you know that the work environment can affect the performance of lash glue? Several external factors can influence the the cyanoacrylate curing process, such as:
- Temperature
- Relative humidity (RH)
- Products applied during the treatment
- pH level of the natural lashes
Understanding this concept is crucial for grasping why your adhesive performs differently under varying temperatures and humidity levels. The most important thing to remember is the higher your humidity, the faster your adhesive will cure. So be cautious and follow the instructions if your working environment is:
- Low Humidity: Increase moisture in the air if the humidity is below or close to the recommended level.
- High Humidity: Reduce moisture with a dehumidifier or use air conditioning if both high temperatures and high humidity are present.
- High Temperature: Use air conditioning to lower the temperature.
- Low Temperature: Raise the room temperature to achieve the desired level.
9. Storage Conditions
Cyanoacrylate, the primary ingredient in lash glue, reacts to even the smallest amount of humidity, beginning the drying process as soon as it’s exposed to air. This means that from the moment lash glue is manufactured and bottled, it starts to deteriorate due to the constant exposure to air, which is unavoidable.
To address this, you might wonder why lash glue isn’t stored in an airtight container. The reason is that lash glue releases a gas during the formulation process. When this gas builds up in an airtight container, it can cause the container to burst. Therefore, lash glue must be kept in a bottle that allows some airflow to prevent explosions.
In optimal storage conditions, unopened lash glue can maintain its best quality for up to 6 months. However, if the storage conditions are not ideal, this period can shorten to as little as 3 months. Additionally, more sensitive glues may expire faster than standard ones.
High humidity, elevated temperatures, and exposure to sunlight can deteriorate the glue, leading to weaker bonding and increased risk of irritation. Failing to seal the container tightly can result in the glue drying out or becoming contaminated
Therefore, proper storage is crucial for keeping your lash glue performing at its best and extending its shelf life. That’s why we’re here to share you some tips to store them correctly:
- Humidity: Below 40%
- Temperature: Less than 3℃ (37.4°F)
- Seal the container when not in use
- Store away from direct sunlight in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated indoor area
- Keep away from heat sources
- Refrigerate unopened glue at 3 degrees Celsius; allow it to reach room temperature for at least 2 hours before use
- Use the designated glue bottles; avoid transferring to other containers
- For wholesale eyelash glue buyers, consider acquiring a dedicated refrigerator to ensure optimal storage conditions.
10. Qualified Certification
Choose lash glues that have been tested and certified for quality and safety. Look for certifications that indicate the adhesive meets industry standards and is safe for use in professional settings.
